Located on the eastern side of the Malappruam district, Nilambur is a serene and charming village, laced on all sides by extensive stretches of dense green forests. The name Nilambur comes from the Sanskirt “Nilamba” which means bamboo. The picturesque beauty of this scenic village is further enhanced by the gorgeous river Chaliyar that winds its way through this village.
The panoramic view of tress and waterfalls, of rivers and green vegetation leaves one spellbound. Nilambur is of extreme historic importance not just in the history of Kerala but of the entire world. Apart from having the first railway line in Kerala set up here in Nilambur, this little village houses the oldest and first ever teak plantation, the Conolly’s plot – in the world.Nilambur is located at a distance of approximately 70 km from Calicut and 100km form Ooty, and just 40 kms from the Malappuram district in Kerala.
Comprising of about 19 talukas in all, this tiny village is sure to surprise you with its cultural heritage, its ancient tribal settlements and most importantly with its abounding wildlife and extensive forests. Ideally situated adjacent to the ghat road between Ooty and Mettuppalayam, Nilambur becomes the ideal halting spot for visitors and tourists enroute to Ooty.
